The International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) is an organisation established to promote inquiry, scholarship and analysis in the area of Popular Music. Founded in 1981, IASPM has grown into an international network of almost 600 members world-wide. The organisation’s activities include conferences, publications, and research projects designed to advance an understanding of Popular Music and the processes involved in its production and consumption. To build a large and diverse body of knowledge of Popular Music, IASPM is interprofessional and interdisciplinary. It welcomes as members anyone involved with Popular Music. To preserve its autonomy, the association remains independent of all commercial and governmental interests.
IASPM and the AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND BRANCH
The Australia-New Zealand branch of IASPM explores all forms of popular music in the Pacific region and beyond. Members have widely acknowledged expertise in indigenous musics, ‘world’ musics, the place of music in cinema, Australian recording and live performance histories, fan cultures and industry studies. Members’ interests extend across pop, rock, country, rap, hip hop, jazz, techno and folk music forms.
IASPM encompasses, and indeed welcomes, the diversity of members’ interests and knowledges as musicians, producers, administrators, DJs, academics, students and fans. The association seeks to reconcile members’ enthusiasm for popular music with issues directly affecting musicians, fans, recording practices, venues, government policy. It provides a vital resource for those interested in popular music to connect with appropriate members and research material in their areas of interest. It also opens up a wide international network of members and branches regarding access to other research networks.
Membership rates vary, depending upon member status (student, full, institutional). For more details please contact the Executive Committee
